This project covers the underground workshop referred to as Shaft 1 Shops. This facility includes vehicle wash bays, several vehicle service bays, fuel/lube storage and dispensing, warehousing and office space.

General

Shaft 1 Shops is located in the vicinity of Shaft 1 to provide maintenance services to the vehicle fleet operating in that area. It also provides office space and amenities to personnel involved in mine planning and operations. Specific facilities include:

Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay

The Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay will incorporate an underbody wash suited to large mine vehicles. Water run-off from the wash bay will drain to the adjacent Sump Bay. An overhead monorail will provide a connection point for fall arrest lanyards in the event personnel are required to work on top of the vehicle during the cleaning process.
This area will include low-pressure and high-pressure water hose reels.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit.
This area will be covered by firewater sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Medium Vehicle Wash Bay
The Medium Vehicle Wash Bay will provide a space for at-grade washing of medium-sized mine vehicles. An underbody wash will not be provided. Water run-off from the wash bay will drain to the adjacent Sump Bay. An overhead monorail will provide a connection point for fall arrest lanyards in the event personnel are required to work on top of the vehicle during the cleaning process.
This area will include low-pressure and high-pressure water hose reels.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit.
This area will be covered by firewater sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Sump Bay
The Sump Bay will collect water run-off from the wash bays in a drive-in sump and pump it to the Shaft 1 Dewatering System. The drive-in sump will feature a perforated screen to prevent large particles from flowing into the adjacent pump compartment. Accumulated waste will be periodically cleaned out of this sump using a front end loader or similar. An oil separator will remove hydrocarbons from the water in the pump compartment and deposit them in a local waste oil tote. The screened and cleaned water will then be pumped out of the sump via a submersible pump.
This area will be ventilated by an air supply fan and ducting.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Welding Bay
The Welding Bay provides a dedicated open area for welding and will include several fume extractors and hoods, welding receptacles, storage racks, work benches and a 30 t overhead crane.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit. This area will include welding fume extractors and associated ducting.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and fire hose reels.

Crane Bay
The Crane Bay will be used during heavy vehicle tyre changes and for vehicle maintenance and repair activities requiring heavy lifts. It will include lubricant and grease dispensing reels, used oil and coolant evacuation pumps, welding receptacles, work benches, storage areas, two 30 t overhead cranes and a crane inspection platform. The crane inspection platform will be positioned to facilitate inspection of both Crane Bay cranes as well as the Welding Bay crane.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit with an additional wall-mounted fan providing further air circulation. This area will include a welding fume extractor and associated ducting.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and fire hose reels.

West Crane Bay
The West Crane Bay is a drive-through bay that will provide vehicle access into the Crane Bay.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Service Bays
Shaft 1 Shops will include four service bays catering for generic heavy vehicle services as well as specialised services or activities. Each service bay will typically include lubricant and grease dispensing reels, used oil and coolant evacuation pumps, welding receptacles, workbenches, minor storage and a 5 t underslung crane. The PM Service Bay will also include a vehicle maintenance lift. The Jumbo Service Bay will be principally used for servicing Jumbo drilling rigs.
These areas will include water and air hose reels.
These areas will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit with additional pedestal fans providing further air circulation. These areas will include vehicle fume extractors, welding fume extractors and associated ducting.
These areas will be covered by fire water sprinklers and fire hose reels.

Service Truck Parking Bay
The Service Truck Parking Bay will provide a temporary parking location for light and heavy vehicles involved in heavy vehicle maintenance activities.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit with an additional wall-mounted fan providing further air circulation.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and fire hose reels.

Tyre Storage Bay
The Tyre Storage Bay will include storage racks for small and large tyres, a tyre inflation cage and ancillary shelving and work benches. A 5 t underslung crane will be installed to assist with tyre storage rack access.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated via air supply ducting connected to a common supply fan.
This area will be covered by fire foam sprinklers. A fire door will be installed at the entrance/exit of this area.

Hose Fitting & Storage Bay
The Hose Fitting & Storage Bay will include a hose cutter, hose press, storage and a work bench.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated via air supply ducting connected to a common supply fan.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers.

Tool Crib Bay
The Tool Crib Bay will provide a central location for the storage of workshop tools.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated via air supply ducting connected to a common supply fan.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers.

Electrical Storage & Shop Bay
The Electrical Storage & Shop Bay will house the Shaft 1 Shops transformer, distribution board/s and lighting panel.
This area will include an air hose reel.
This area will be ventilated by an air supply fan and ducting.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers.

Waste Management Bay
The Waste Management Bay will provide a central location for waste prior to its removal to the surface. It will include different rubbish bin types (eg recyclables, cardboard, general rubbish, etc) and a waste coolant tote.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit. This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Fuel/Lube Storage Bay
The Fuel/Lube Storage Bay will include:

  • Three self-bunded 10,750 L diesel storage tanks
  • Diesel dispensing pumps and filters
  • Diesel drop line accumulator
  • Eight lubricant storage systems each including two 1,000 L totes, dispensing pump and filters as required
  • Waste hydrocarbon tote (1000 L).

Diesel will be loaded into the storage tanks via a surface batch tank and drop line. A lubricant will be refilled by swapping out the removable upper tote in each lubricant system. A 2 t underslung crane will be installed in the lube storage component to facilitate upper tote replacement. The bay will be bunded to capture minor spills.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will include an air exhaust fan and ducting.
This area will be covered by fire foam sprinklers. Fire doors will be installed at both ends of this area.

Fuel/Lube Bay
The Fuel/Lube Bay will include a set of lubricant top-up hoses and two diesel refuelling points. The concrete in this area will be graded towards a local sump for the capture of minor spills.
This area will include water and air hose reels.
This area will include air exhaust ducting connected to the Fuel/Lube Storage Bay exhaust fan.
This area will be covered by fire foam sprinklers. Fire doors will be installed at the entry and exit of this area.

Mechanical Plant Bay
The Mechanical Plant Bay will feature several items of equipment including:

  • The heavy vehicle undercarriage wash tank and pump
  • Two high-pressure washers
  • A 1000 L degreaser tote and dispensing pump
  • The main vehicle fume exhaust fan
  • The main welding fume exhaust fan.

This bay is also the entry point for the diesel drop line which supplies diesel to the Fuel/Lube Storage Bay.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit. This area will be covered by a fire water hose reel.

Utilities Bay
The Utilities Bay will include the shop air receiver and dryer, fire suppression foam tank and control valve bank, and toilets.
This area will be ventilated by the underground mine primary ventilation circuit. This area will also include exhaust ducting for the shop toilets.
This area will be covered by firewater sprinklers and a fire hose reel.
2.18 Warehouse
The warehouse will provide two levels of pallet storage and shelving, a pallet stacker charging station and a small office. Goods access to the upper level will be via a lifting well.
This area will include an air supply fan, air exhaust fan, and associated ducting.
This area will be covered by firewater sprinklers and a fire hose reel. Fire doors will be installed at both ends of this area.

Office, Lunchroom & Refuge Area
The Office, Lunchroom & Refuge Area will be a two-level facility that includes the following:

  • Office space
  • Control room
  • First aid room
  • Meeting room/lunch area
  • Wash area
  • Toilets.

The area incorporating the first aid room and meeting/lunch area will be a designated refuge area. It will be fully sealed and fitted with refuge chamber doors at both ends, a CO2 scrubber, oxygen bottles and a compressed air supply.
This area will be air-conditioned and will include an air exhaust system.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers.

LV Parking
The LV Parking area will provide space for several light vehicles to park off the main access drive adjacent to the Office, Lunchroom & Refuge Area.
This area will be ventilated by an air supply fan and ducting.
This area will be covered by fire water sprinklers and a fire hose reel.

Air-Locks
Two air-locks will be installed as part of Shaft 1 Shops to control ventilation within the facility:

  • East Shops Air-Lock
  • West Shops Air-Lock.

Each air-lock will consist of a pair of hydraulically-operated vent doors. These doors will incorporate service penetrations and personnel air-locks as required.
